Wellness in the Land of the Brave:
Getting Fit Without Breaking the Bank

By Francouis Pretorius

Let’s be honest. Staying fit in Namibia isn’t always easy. Gym memberships can be expensive. Healthy food feels like a luxury. And if you live outside major cities like Windhoek or Swakop, your options for wellness support may feel… limited.

But here’s the truth: you don’t need imported protein powders, expensive equipment, or elite training programs to get healthy. What you need is consistency, community, and creativity — all of which we have in abundance here in the Land of the Brave.

1. Start With What You Have

You don’t need a gym to get strong. You have your body, the floor, the sun, and the sand. That’s enough.

Try this simple full-body routine:

  • Push-ups (wall, knee, or full) – 3 sets of 10–15
  • Bodyweight squats – 3 sets of 15–20
  • Mountain climbers – 3 sets of 20 seconds
  • Plank hold – 3 rounds of 30 seconds
  • Jumping jacks – 3 sets of 30 seconds

Bonus: If you have a 5L water bottle or a school backpack, you’ve got a weight!

2. Eat Local. Eat Smart.

Forget imported “superfoods.” Namibia is full of affordable nutrition:

  • Mahangu (pearl millet) – energy powerhouse, perfect for mornings
  • Beans & lentils – protein-packed and budget-friendly
  • Wild spinach (ombidi), moringa, and tswana pumpkin – locally grown, rich in iron, vitamins, and fiber
  • Oshikundu – a healthier fermented drink alternative when made traditionally (just watch the sugar)

The trick isn’t to eat less. It’s to eat closer to the earth and cut the processed stuff.

3. Train Your Mind Like You Train Your Body

Mental health is health. Period.

Start with:

  • 5–10 minutes of quiet every morning
  • Journaling your goals and stressors
  • Saying no to things that drain you
  • Surrounding yourself with positive, like-minded people

Even breathing deeply for 3 minutes can reset your entire nervous system. Trust me. Try it before work or school tomorrow.

4. Make It Namibian. Make It Yours.

You don’t have to copy influencers from New York or Johannesburg. You’re building something for you, here, in our soil. Whether you jog along the dunes, dance kwaito for cardio, or prep traditional food with a healthy twist, own it.

We’re not trying to look like anyone else. We’re trying to feel strong in our own skin, live longer, and inspire our communities.
